A new generation operational oil drift prediction system for Norway

Tildelt: kr 1,6 mill.

This proposal describes how Norway can obtain a new generation oprational oil drift prediction system at a relatively low cost. The present operational system at kilden.met.no has proven robust over the last decade or so, but limitations have appeared in recent years, the primary being limited capability to deal with near-shore oil spill scenarios and inacurate description of vertical motion and dispersion of the oil in sea water. In the proposed project it is described how one of the worlds leading oil d rift computer codes, OSCAR, can be implemented in the met.no operational system for postcasting, nowcasting or forecasting of oil drift after and oil spill at sea. The proposal is supported by the Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies ( NOFO) who will provide 20% of the required funding in addition to necessary personnel time for specification, evaluation and testing of the product. Information Technology students on internships will be sought involved in the programming, and a plan for national and international publication and dissemination is presented.
