To enable safe, economical and environmentally acceptable solutions for improving oil and gas recovery from mature fields and for exploitation of deep and ultra-deep offshore reservoirs, new downhole technologies are required. Electrification of downhole applications has proven to be very promising. The mechanisms, many of which had been mechanically or hydraulically powered in the past and recently started being electrified, include drilling motors, subsurface valves, progressive cavity pumps, intervent ion tools, etc. The most central challenges met by the drive system designer in downhole applications are confined space, high temperature and high pressure. The approach to achieve the set goals is based on: - Analysis of potential applications, choic e of three of them for more detailed investigation - Creation and validation of mathematical models on system and component level - Development of new solutions like active cooling of electronics, multidrives, wireline communication - Mapping drives techn ologies vs. downhole applications - Building and testing prototypes, containing the innovations The project implies cooperation with Norwegian as well as foreign institutions. Cooperation with Finland and The Netherlands will be on special materials and components. Cooperation with Russia will be in research of certain electric drive types. Main research partners of SmartMotor are NTNU (Trondheim) and MPEI-TU (Moscow). The novelties will provide efficient and reliable operation in deeper wells with hig her temperature and pressure than in today's electrified wells. Results of the project will enable many new applications. The proposed novel solution benefit from synergy effect, when united into one optimized package, and may be regarded as a major step in relation to state of the art.
