Reduction of non-productive time by in-depth analyses of wellbore restrictions based on real-time drilling data

Tildelt: kr 2,5 mill.

Oil well drilling is getting increasingly complex. More process parameters are recorded and transferred from surface and bottom hole sensors at a much higher rate than earlier. Although technology is advancing, process failures continue to occur. Loss of time, caused by unwanted events, is costly. With increasing quality of drilling parameters, the project hypothesis is that the type of wellbore restrictions can be identified through modelling of the surface response. The problem addressed in this study is wellbore restrictions. Restrictions that seem similar on the surface have completely different causes, exemplified through three different restrictions: - Accumulated Cuttings, mainly caused by poor cuttings transport - Larger pieces falling in from th e wellbore ceiling, caused by weak and unstable formations - Hole enlargement, caused by erosion of swelled shale Once the type of restriction has been determined, and the root cause behind the restriction is revealed, the treatment of the problem will b ecome more purposeful and efficient. Different root causes will result in completely different repair strategies. Selecting wrong repair strategy may even worsen the situation instead of improving it. The desire to determine the cause of physical restrict ions in the wellbore is therefore the driving motivation in this project. Real time field data of hundreds of restrictions will be investigated along with daily drilling reports, lithology, etc. A set of the most typical cases for each restriction type will be picked out, forming the recipe of relevant drilling parameter signatures. Revelation of root cause of the downhole problems in real time represents the ultimate insight into the downhole process, but also a great challenge. The project requires d etailed and advanced mathematical modeling. We therefore need to focus on the local physical phenomenon.
