Risk-based design principles for energy installations due to climate change effects

Tildelt: kr 2,0 mill.

Climate change is real and owners and operators of oil & gas installations have to adapt to a different environment. Decisions will have to be made under large degree of uncertainty. There are today no specific methods that combine global climate models w ith structural design methods. Hence the uncertainty in the decisions becomes even larger. Our proposal will help to reduce this uncertainty and help to take better investment decisions. DNV together with Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research propose to d eliver a draft guideline combining state-of-the-art climate modelling with state-of-the-art structural design methods. This has never been done before. Once completed, the method will help industry and authorities to take complicated and critical decisi ons with respect to how to prepare offshore oil&gas installations for future changes in the environment. We will base the work on the climate models used in the current and updated IPCC Report developed by Bjerknes and the DNV Recommended Practice on Env ironmental Loads, DNV-RP-C205. The approach will be risk based where expected loss will be expressed in monetary term.
