Shift work and health in the Norwegian Petroleum industry, Work-personal life intergration - a continuation

Tildelt: kr 1,3 mill.

This proposal is a continuation of an ongoing project within the Petromaks-programme. Up to date research into need for recovery, recovery activities as well as excretion of stress hormones have been linked to recovery between working days or over a perio d of 2 days off. The work time arrangements in the Norwegian petroleum sector, with the long restoration periods, allow for studying long-term recovery. There is also a need for more knowledge considering the association between shift work and health amon g female workers, due to lacking knowledge about female workers in the petroleum-industry. This proposal includes four research activites related to the above mentioned research needs. The first activity is measuring cortisol in saliva and measuring card iovascular fitness on a group of 50 shift workers. Salivatests will be taken 3 times a day on five predefined days from the first day in the restoration period, with the last day of measurement on the 11th day in the restoration period. The second activ ity is qualitative interviews of 15 female petroleum workers to explore how female petroleum workers experience their health in relation to working shifts in the petroleum industry. The third activity is studying "need for recovery" in a large populatio n of offhsore and onshore petroleum workers. This project is part of a large questionnaire survey in the petroleum industry in close coperation with National Insitute of Occupational Health and University of Bergen. The fourth activity is a menstruation diary, were female shift workers will, for the duration of 4 months, daily asess actual work time, menstruatal cycle and menstruation related pain. This activity is in close cooperation with the University of Bergen. The total sum applied for is 1 596 00 00 Nkr. Financial contributing partners are Oljeindustriens landsforening, Norges Rederiforbund and Industri Energi and they will fund 20% of the total sum.
