User-centered evaluation of Large Screen Displays

Tildelt: kr 0,20 mill.

Large Screen Displays have become more and more common in offshore control rooms. Although originally developed for the nuclear power industry and train traffic management, these designs have been ported to offshore control rooms. There have been indicati ons of dissatisfaction with these LSD solutions, as users may not be using these systems as originally intended. This asks for an investigation into the actual usage of these displays and its relationship to the original intentions of the designers and pu rchasers of such systems. With these results we may be better able to understand the disuse and misuse of these systems. A stakeholder analysis provides further input into novel and innovative ways of LSD usage inside and outside of the control room arena . As a result, LSD solutions can be used to their full benefit. The establishment of a consortium to investigate these issues further in the main project will be achieved in three ways: 1) a stakeholder analysis, 2) a state-of-the-art of LSD usage throug h a literature study, 3) a survey and a workshop. The survey aims to gather information from LSD users, purchasers and designers. It will provide preliminary information regarding the actual and intended usage of LSD solutions. Based on the survey results a workshop will be organized in which the different stakeholders (regulators, developers, industry users and research) can further elaborate on the above-mentioned issues. Based on the survey- and workshop outcomes, the research questions for the main pr oject can be prioritized. The participation of stakeholders in the survey and the workshop aims to spark interest within the stakeholders to investigate these issues further in a larger setting. As such, this project aims to provide initial empirical ev idence that will function as a foundation for further research and development activities with a consortium of research and industry partners. HFS will lead and perform the activities within this pre-project.
