ESC Working Group on Cardiac Cellular Electrophysiology

The ESC Working Group on Cardiac Cellular Electrophysiology is an annual international meeting, bringing prominent scientists and group leaders within the field together with young scientists. Host function is circulating among the European partners tha t have contributed importantly to the working group. The meeting is arranged over three days, with 3-4 invited lectures by prominent scientists for presentation of state of the art in central questions within the field. Ongoing work is presented in app. 2 0 lectures chosen from submitted abstracts, as well as several poster sessions. An important goal for the meeting is the establishment of new collaborations at an international level. This includes exchange of scientists at PhD and post doctoral level. T he meeting usually gathers about 200 participants. The Oslo meeting for 2011 will be a part of the 200th anniversary of the University of Oslo and will include a special invited lecture intended for a broader academic public. The field of cardiac electr ophysiology is an expanding area of cardiology that is receiving increasing attention at all levels of research, i.e. from basic to clinical studies. Even though prophylaxis and treatment of heart disease has improved greatly the last decades, morbidity a nd mortality from cardiac arrhythmias remains a large and possibly increasing problem. Improved treatment strategies from insight into basic mechanisms for these conditions are needed for diverse patient populations, ranging from an increasing number of e lderly with heart failure to inherited diseases causing sudden cardiac death in childhood and adolescence, such as Cathecholaminerg Polymorfic Ventricular Tachycardia.
