Publication support: More Than A Hole in the Wall

This grant proposal asks for financial support for the publication of Finn Arne Jørgensen's book "More Than a Hole in the Wall: The Infrastructure of Beverage Container Recycling" with Rutgers University Press in spring/summer 2011. The book will be publi shed in the Studies in Modern Science, Technology, and the Environment series, edited by Mark A. Largent. The book is a substantially revised version of Jørgensen's doctoral dissertation from Norwegian University of Science and Technology, 2007. His PhD fellowship was funded by the Productivity 2005 programme (co-sponsored by the Research Council of Norway) and the Faculty of Humanities, Norwegian University of Science and Technology. While the core manuscript was based on the dissertation, the revised v ersion has gone through the publisher's independent peer review, superceding any comments from the doctoral evaluation committee. The book examines the modern history of Scandinavian beverage container recycling, focusing particularly on the history of t he Norwegian company Tomra Systems ASA. Tomra has become one of Norway's most successful international companies and were pioneers in developing environmental technology solutions for the global marketplace. The book explores the inherent challenges and p ossibilities in transfering environmental technologies and values across international boundaries and between countries. This is the first book presenting this material to an international audience.
