Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems for Ships - their effect on PM formation as function of fuels employed

This project will clarify the efficiencies of different EGCS technologies to remove particles of different sizes. It will also by measuring performance of the EGCS units identify their characteristics also in other respects. The basis for this characteriz ation is most important, a well qualified approach to select the best measuring methods to be used for readings of physical and chemical characteristics. The identification of proper instrumentation and simultaneous use of same will prepare makers and leg islation to select the correct methods to be applied when measuring EGCS in tests, for type approval or later possibly as fiscal measurements. MARINTEK has trough a research project funded by the Norwegian Research council gained knowledge and experience on PM measurement. The title of the project is "Study of the effects of NOx emission reduction from ships on fuel consumption and other emissions with emphasis on particulates". This competence will now be applied in research and development of EGCS syst ems with two different technologies in this project. Particle size distribution is becoming more important as the health effect caused by the small particles becomes clearer. Investigating particle size distributions on EGCS will give more information on how well EGCS work. The ability to deliver proven reduction systems with verified reduction capacity, stability and reliability is a "to be or not to be" issue for suppliers of EGCS technology. When the legislations become more active, suppliers with pro ven systems with good documentation will have possibilities for large marked shares. The companies with proven documented solutions will also win the competition towards unprofessional suppliers, as proper regulations and a regime for emission measurement s will be enforced.
