Situation Awareness and Decision Support Tools for demanding marine operations

In the SITAWARE project we will study how people make decisions during demanding and advanced marine operations, particularly under stress. The purpose is to learn how to build optimal systems for Situation Awareness (SA) and operator decision support. Advanced and demanding marine operations have become more challenging (deeper waters, heavier loads, hasher environments) and control systems and organisations have consequently become more complicated. The trend has been to add more technology, functiona lity and routines to the technical system. There is to-day a vast gap between the data available to the user and the information really needed. The SITAWARE project intends to alter this trend of growing complexity by user-centred design (UCD) that simpli fies the technical systems and interfaces. We want to change focus from technology-centred to human- and task-centred design processes and need a solid scientific basis to do so. We will therefore start with a literature study followed by detailed analys is of one or two advanced marine operations and a System Design Specification. A prototype will be built and implemented in a simulator environment where experienced operators and users will evaluate the prototype and give their feedback. The project will benefit from the results from the ended project "Respons prediksjon og operasjons optimalisering for brønnintervensjonsfartøy" (NFR no 180167) and the ongoing project "Simulering av Krevende Maritime Operasjoner" (SIMAR, no 200858). The primary goal for Kongsberg Maritime is to launch a new generation of support systems and solutions for advanced marine operations. The new support systems will not be limited to the actual equipment and systems on board each vessel. We will also focus on how to support a ll phases of an operation (planning, execution and evaluation) including human aspects like the need for education, skill training as well as crew resource management training.
