Green and Safe Transport in Commercial Shipping -GSS
Today international shipping is growing, and two main challenges are:
-Large emissions of Greenhouse gases
-Accidents and related spill
Norwegian Authorities has fronted the benefit of having a sustai nable and environmental leading shipping industry in Norway. One of MAROFF's main goals is "To support R&D aiming to reduce fossil fuel consumption and contribute to reduction of environmental damaging leaks".
Navtor AS, StormGeo AS and Telko AS are th ree Norwegian companies that through a strategic partnership will be able to contribute positively to the main goals addressed by MAROFF.
The underlying idea of the project is to join and, by pin-pointed R&D efforts, strongly enhance two leading maritime services; Navtor's ENC distribution and StormGeo's routing service. This will enable Greener and Safer commercial shipping.
From a market point of view, the timing is just right as the ECDIS mandate's implementation period starts in 2012 and ends in 2 018. The potential earnings from an integrated service approach will be much stronger than the sum of earning of each single service.
To obtain user requirements, and timely input underway, a user group consisting of representative Norwegian ship-owners is already established.
The primary objective for the R&D project is to merge enhanced weather routing services with a new ECDIS platform including an ENC service, contributing to a reduced energy consumption and environmental footprint of the shippin g industry, while simultaneously increasing safety related to navigation. Two main secondary objectives are to develop a shore based routing, and utilize the EPS system as input.
The MAROFF GSS project will contribute significantly to move larger part o f international shipping into a direction of becoming more sustainable, this will help in reducing the increase in Green House gasses, which is a main goal for humanity the next decades.
