The Euthalian Apparatus Text, Translation, and Commentary

"The Euthalian Apparatus. Text Translation Commentary" is a translation and commentary on the ?Euthalian apparatus?, a corpus of auxiliary Greek texts that summarize the apostolic writings of the New Testament. The material is found in a great number of G reek biblical manuscripts. Some sources identify the author as ?Euthalius, bishop of Sulci? but almost nothing is known about this figure. The short apocryphal ?Prayer of Euthalius? has been transmitted as a part of the Armenian New Testament. Lorenzo Zac agni edited the apparatus in his Collectanea (Rome, 1698). This work forms the basis of all later editions. The dissertation by Vemund Blomkvist (2011) is a commentary on those parts of the apparatus that reflect or paraphrase the biblical text (chapter t itles, argumenta, and prologues). These have been translated into English by Blomkvist. The aim of the study is to describe the relationship between the Euthalian apparatus and the biblical texts. This focus separates his commentary from most earlier stud ies. Thus, the biblical text appears in his commentary together with the Euthalian texts since the Euthalian texts cannot be properly understood without it. The idea is that the biblical text and the apparatus form a ?system?, and that this system may be studied as a unity. The commentary shows that the different genres of the apparatus offer quite different paraphrases of the apostolic writings: The ?argumenta? present a radicalized interpretation of Paul?s theology, while the chapter titles seem to be c loser to the biblical text. The dissertation also includes parallel materials from ancient and modern commentaries. Four of these sources are collected in an appendix. Blomkvist began his Euthalian studies as Prof. Nils Alstrup Dahl?s assistant in 1994. T ogether with Prof. David Hellholm (who is also the advisor of the dissertation), he has published a study on the meta-terminology of the apparatus (?Paraenesis as an ancient genre-designation?, 2002).
