Dette prosjektet vil utvikle en ny og forbedret skipsdesign tilnærming, som omfatter ingeniørtjenester og fabrikasjon aspekter. Dette vil føre til gjennomføringen av mer effektive metoder for å legge til rette for modulær og standardisert skipsdesign, eng ineering og fabrikasjon i Ulstein Gruppen. Design programvare og web-baserte kommunikasjonsverktøy vil bli integrert i den nye tilnærmingen. Dette prosjektet vil ikke utvikle sine egne programvareverktøy, men baserer sin suksess på anvendelse av nye, åpne og eksisterende programvare plattformer og deres effektiv kombinasjon.

Typically, offshore vessel design, engineering and fabrication follow fairly traditional approaches and so is also the use of conventional ship marine systems design theory, methods and analyses tools. Current ship design, engineering and fabrication appr oaches are partly fragmented, discontinuous and very time consuming and laborious the way they normally are carried out. Rationalization of business and work processes (e.g., modularization, parameterization and other design automation techniques) have so far, only to little extent been tested out and implemented. The marine industry is traditional and a conservative business when it comes to changing its value-chain. The value-chain is complex and many actors are involved in it. Traditions and approache s vary from country to country. Ship fabrication methods varies from ship yard to ship yard and the standard by which ship design drawing packages are prepared and communicated among the actors of a ship new building project and follow up varies a lot. On ly to a limited extent are novel and state of the art knowledge and technology (ICT-tools) in use to streamline and improve the efficiency of such work processes and actor interphases. The competitiveness of Norwegian design firms will to a large extent b e dependent upon how far these approach opportunities are explored and utilized in the years to come. This project will develop a new and improved ship design approach, which includes engineering and fabrication aspects, and which will lead to the implem entation of more effective methods to facilitate modular and standardized ship design, engineering and fabrication approaches in the Ulstein Group. A most promising suit of design software and web-based communication tool will be integrated into the new approach. This project will not develop its own software tools, but base its success on the application of new, open and existing software suite platforms and their effective combination.
